Technical Description
A superb and rare vaseline glass claret jug with its original cut ball stopper. It has an applied handle and hobnail decoration. Polished pontil.
Historical Relevance
The decorative hobnails around the body are very much associated with the USA company Fenton from the 1930s and there are many 1000’s of pieces of Fenton hobnail decorated glass online.
We are certainly not Fenton experts, however, in our humble opinion, this is not Fenton. The stopper style (which we are happy is original), the neck shape, handle design and pontil do not fit into the Fenton category.
So, who made it?
Unfortunately, as things stand, we don’t know…we can’t find another example…anywhere. We searched extensively online over many platforms and sites as well as the many books we have…and as far as we can tell this is the only example of a hobnail jug in this design…never mind making things complex by adding in the fact that its Vaseline glass.
I think under those circumstances it has the right to be called rare.
Personally, I love it
