Technical Description
A magnificent 19th-century rummer glass. A large bucket bowl with slice cutting beautifully engraved with hops and barley, the initials MJ or JM and dated 1848. Slice cut capstan stem on a large foot with a polished pontil.
Historical Relevance
Chopin visits London and Scotland, his last public appearance on a concert platform being on 16 November 1848 at the Guildhall, London. Also in December 1848 a picture of the royal family gathered around a Christmas tree at Windsor Castle appears on the cover of The Illustrated London News (special Christmas supplement), popularising the custom of the Christmas tree in Britain.
