Technical Description
A superb 19th-century wine glass goblet that dates to c1890 very much in the Art Nouveau style. It has a long round funnel bowl beautifully engraved with flowers, reeds, and Lilly pads sitting in and around a pond. Incised twist stem above a conical engraved foot with a polished pontil.
An English glass and one of the most delicate engravings that can be achieved using a rotating wheel or any other tool, to highlight this, you might not even notice the lapping striations of the water or shading applied to the leaves. The glass exhibits budding and blooming lilies surrounded by the lily pads with bullrushes growing on a patch of land amongst different types of highly detailed foliage. This ‘rope twist’ stem is very indicative of the period and takes its ‘inciced twist’ style from similar glasses in the earlier Georgian period. The twisting technique dates back to the early Roman period used to create spindle distaffs, in the Victorian & Edwardian periods you would have seen it used for jug and carafe handles, the hanging arms of epergnes and intricate chandeliers.
An exceptional example.
