Technical Description
An exceptional 18th century bonnet glass with an ogee bowl which has a notch cut rim above a band of engraved flowers and leaves. Petal moulding to the lower half which continues down into the rudimentary stem. Conical foot with a snapped pontil. Unusual to find a petal moulded or engraved example.
Comments
A very popular glass from the 18th century, the most common examples having full diamond or honeycomb moulding. Very occasionally you come across an example that has a little more...something different...in this case a notch cut rim, engraving and fine sharp petal moulding to the lower bowl section and stem.
We have only ever had one example which was petal moulded and engraved. The only other example we could find was in the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.
It comes from a small, but high quality collection we will be presenting over the next few weeks.
