Comments
A composite stem is made up from two or more recognised stem forms, e.g. plain stem & opaque twist stem, opaque twist stem & air twist stem or knops, air twist stem or knops & plain stem etc. This example is particularly fine example.
You can see various composite stem glasses in Bickerton starting on page 188. Composite Stems form a very small section of the overall 18th cen glass forms and production levels were small and as such, they are highly desirable and difficult to source.
This glass comes from the Michael Wallis collection which took over 45 years to build and contains over 250 drinking glasses, covering all forms from the 18th century, many exceptionally rare.
