Rare Four Sided Engraved Pedestal Stem Wine Glass Goblet c1720

£3,400.00 $4,253.40 Product Code: 2023060202

Technical Description

An exceptional example of a pedestal stem wine goblet dating to c1720.

It has a highly decorative lid above an engraved round funnel bowl with a solid section at the base. Sits on a four-sided pedestal stem with a central air tear above an engraved conical folded foot.

The lid has a spiral rope twist and crimped 'crown', engraved with a foliate band.

The bowl has a mirrored 'RC' monogram with an open crown above. On the reverse, we have a cartouche showing a crest with three small wolf heads and a large wolf head above which could represent a family or a physical place. On each side of the bowl, we have engraved branches and flowers, each containing a detailed bird in different poses.

Lidded English goblets from the 18th century are exceptionally rare and the question always arises as to whether the lid is original. A nice tight fit and the same colour and age of glass is obviously important and if engraved, one would expect the style of the engraving from the bowl to be mirrored on the lid. In this case, the foliate band around the lid's rim matches very closely to the branches and flowers on the bowl and is a perfect fit.

The glass with its lid is spectacular and we don’t recall seeing such an example before. It may well have been made as a special commission.

Historical Context

On May 1, 1707, England and Scotland were officially “United into One Kingdom by the Name of Great Britain.” The agreement lent Scotland economic security and access to England's colonial trade network and likewise England gained a safeguard against France, as well as the Jacobite supporters of the deposed James II.
