Technical Description
A very fine and quite rare example of an 18th century opaque twist wine glass.
Bucket bowls are uncommon on any 18th century wine glass, but when you come across a large bucket bowl like this...with the added band of rib moulding at the base...it sets the glass apart.
Double series opaque twist stem consisting of a pair of spiral tapes outside a gauze. High conical foot with snapped pontil.
Comments
I can't say for sure how many 18th century wine glasses I've had in the last 20 years, but its a few. What I can say is that the overall form of this glass is a delight to my eyes. It has balance and poise and is exceptionally well made. The joins are clean and the stem (although a more common variety), is perfect from the very top to the very bottom. Whoever made this glass knew what they were doing.
The foot has a few tiny small nibbles to the underside rim (which is simply perfect wear for a glass 250+ years old). For me personally, it means nothing. Every glass is unique and every glass has its own story...if only this one could tell its tales...I'm sure those little nibbles are well earned.
Overall an exceptional glass.
