Technical Description
An engraved 18th century Jacobite Sympathy wine glass. It has a waisted round funnel bowl engraved with a Jacobite Carnation leaves and a large moth. Colour twist stem consisting of alternating red and white spiral tapes outside a white gauze. Conical foot.
Historical Relevance
Jacobites and their love of carnations are well documented. We have included a portrait of Louisa Maria Stuart from 1704, known to the Jacobites as Princess Royal, which hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. It shows her large red and white carnation above her right breast with further carnations in her hair.
