Technical Description
A rare pair of champagne coupes from the late Victorian era. They are usually found in a clear glass rather than this rare green hue. They have coupe bowls with engraved Lilly upon slice cut and central knoped stems. Conical feet with polished pontils. Produced by Richardsons of Stourbridge in the Lilly pattern and in one of their classic apple green colours.
Richardsons were one of the most famous glasshouses of the period and became renowned for having the most varied and vivid green hues available on the market. At that time the creative process had passed from the craftsman, in this case the wheel cutter, to the designer. As the Industrial revolution pressed forward many industries, including glass, found ways to become streamlined in order to compete and this propelled named designers to fame as well as the glasshouses that could attract them. The cutters themselves became more sought after if they could achieve the designers vision, many becoming famous due to their collaborations or due to becoming the head cutter of a major company.
