Technical Description 

An exceptionally rare 19th century blue glass leech jar. The turned rim is used to accommodate a cloth lid tied with a string to contain the leeches. The base has a snaped. You normally find these bowls in clear glass and this is the first example we have seen in blue. An exceptional piece.

Date & Origin 

England, c1830. Period of William IV.

Condition

Very small nibble to rim, no other damage or restoration.

Height: 6cm Diameter: 6.8cm.

Historical Context

Hand-blown around the time the first brine bath at Droitwich Spa opened in 1830.

This piece comes from the Dr Jill Turnbull collection which was put together as part of Jill's research for her books, including 'From Goblets to Gaslights, The Scottish Glass Industry 1750-2006. Exhibit will be presenting the collection for sale over the coming months.
