Technical Description
A very impressive 18th-century wine glass. It has an ogee bowl engraved with a stylized wild rose and a smaller flower on each side, each with two buds and an additional flower sprig on the reverse. Sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of a 3 ply spiral band outside a multiply spiral. Conical foot with a snapped pontil.
An excellent Jacobite Sympathy example, the standard six-petalled rose with two buds being replaced by a very unusual stylized wild rose with two small flowers, one on either side. The wild rose refers to fertility being restored again and the white rose of the Stuarts. The white rose was also worn to celebrate the ‘Old Pretenders’ birthday (James Francis Edward Stuart, son of James II of England)
