Technical Description
A rare Jacobite engraved 18th century cordial air twist glass. The drawn trumpet bowl engraved with a rose, open bud, closed bud and oak leaf. This is supported by a multi spiral air twist stem upon a conical foot with a rough pontil.
Having looked at the engravings carefully, the glass could be associated to either engraver C or E (according to Seddon) however the workmanship is slightly more nieve than I would expect from either...based on comparative work. There are those who argue that the more nieve examples of Jacobite engravings, which are found on most forms, are in fact the earlier examples. It could also be, that in this case, the bowl is much smaller than a standard wine or even a dram and that there is little surface area to work on and design within. Either way, we think its a great glass, the small cordial form being rather special.
Historical Relevance
Hand-blown around the time the Gin Act 1743 which attempted to increase taxation on gin provoked riots in London.
