Technical Description

An early 19th century Scottish thistle claret jug. Slice cut neck and applied handle above a fine band of diamond cuts with further slice cuts below.

Although this design was copied by a number of manufacturers such as Richardsons and Edinburgh Crystal in the late 19th and early 20th century this is a much earlier piece. The handle style, neck ring, cutting and colour would all point to a date as early as 1815 and no later than 1840. A rare piece and I don't recall having or seeing a thistle claret this early before.

Historical Relevance

The Duke of Wellington has victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Fighting in the War of 1812 between the UK and the United States also ceases, peace terms having been agreed at the end of 1814. This year also sees the introduction of the Corn Laws which protect British land owners from cheaper foreign imports of corn.
