Technical Description
An 18th century engraved Ale glass tumbler. It has a tapered bowl with swags and pendants around the rim. Engraved with the name SARAH BIDE 1775 above a wreath of hops and barley which spreads around the bowl.

Historical Context
1780 saw the birth of Robert Owen in Wales, the businessman and a social reformer credited with becoming one of the founders of socialism and of the cooperative movement. Best known for his association with New Lanark where he became manager in 1800 at the age of only 20. New Lanark became a model for industrial communities that was to spread across the world in the 19th and 20th centuries.
