Technical Description
A Roman glass pilgrim flask blown from a pale green glass, appearing quite clear and translucent in some areas. A convex, barrel-shaped neck with a knocked-off rim leads to the sloping shoulders of a somewhat lentoid form body that is flattened and tapered to the curved base.
Distinct and beautiful weathering patterns have formed throughout the piece including upon the edge of the rim. An interesting piece when inspecting closely the flaking layers of calcite weathering. This form is an early predecessor to the twin-handled pilgrim flask more commonly found in the 3rd - 4th centuries with a flared rim and at times exhibiting applied trailing.
Date & Origin
Roman, Mid Imperial Empire 2nd - 3rd century CE.
Condition
Pitting creates areas of texture next to more preserved smooth surfaces. The weathering flakes naturally to reveal different hues of cream-toned layers.
