Technical Description

A wonderful 18th century glass tumbler. Tapered form with naturalistic and geometric engravings with a deceptive bowl and a band of flute cuts around the base. Polished pontil.

Historical Context

1780 saw the birth of Robert Owen in Wales, the businessman and a social reformer credited with becoming one of the founders of socialism and of the cooperative movemen. Best known for his association with New Lanark where he became manager in 1800 at the age of only 20. New Lanark became a model for industrial communities that was to spread across the world in the 19th and 20th centuries.
