Technical Description

A stunning antique silver vesta case dating to 1909. Loop attachment to the top. Fully hallmarked for Chester, 1909.

The monogram's letters are G.F.A . Traditionally the three-letter monogram denotes the first, last and middle names in that order. In this case, the central letter 'F' is representative of the 'French' family name. The emblem is attributed to Robert French, esquire of Monavi Castle in Galway Ireland. This vesta case is likely a relative of Robert's, perhaps a son or brother. The crest is described as "A dolphin naiant".

The motto represents The Order of the Ermine (L’Ordre de l’Hermine), a chivalric order created in 1464 by king Ferdinand I of Naples. The order survived throughout the 14th and 15th centuries in the Duchy of Brittany, the order was revived in the 20th century by the Cultural Institute of Brittany as an honour for those contributing to Breton culture. "Malo Mori Quam Foedari" is a Heraldic motto that translates to mean "I would rather die than be dishonoured".
