Technical Description
An extraordinary pair of rectangular 18th century Armorial Engraved glass decanters dating to c1760. Truly remarkable works of art.
They have their original silver-topped filigree stoppers. The poring rims are facet cut hendecagons with 11 sides with an array of different ornate facet cutting styles to the shoulders.
The decanters have incredibly detailed engravings depicting a bishop's coat of arms surmounted by a cardinal's hat and surrounded by rococo scrolls and flowers with polished detailing.
Very much in the continental style, the decanters are lead glass. They would have been commissioned pieces and unique to the cardinal.
The decanters come with the original 1979 Phillips Auction catalogue for English glass and ceramics, where they are pictured on plate II and described in full for lot 64. They sold for £850 hammer which in today's money, just accounting for inflation, would be over £5,500.
