Technical Description 

An excellent 19th century Red serving bottle or decater dating to c1860.

 

It has its original hexagonal stopper engraved with fruiting vine, this engraving continuing down and around the bottle with a polished pontil on the base.

 

High quality English example.

England, c1860. Period of Victoria.

Condition

Excellent, age-related wear as shown. No chips cracks or restoration, clean and clear.

Height: 33cm (including stopper) Diameter: 8.5cm.

Historical Context

Benjamin Henry perfects the Henry rifle which was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company, and used in considerable numbers by certain Union army units in the American Civil War. Confederates called the Henry "that damned Yankee rifle that they load on Sunday and shoot all week!"
