Art Deco Istvan Komaromy Glass Dancer c1938

£450.00 $561.20 Product Code: 2023012508

Technical Description

A fine example of Istvan Kormaromy workmanship, dating to c1938 depicting a beautiful dancer with both feet on a black glass plinth.

It would never have had a label, as its too early and is definately by Kormaromy. We received an email from his daughter (who has 9 grand children) confirming that it was definately made by her father and dates to 1938 rather than 1935 as we had originally stated.

The email from his daughter is below.

You have a superb example of my late fathers work who, altho he was born in German as you correctly say (I’d guess from either my website or Angela B‘s  Glass encyclopaedic w/s, was actually proudly Hungarian and his birth was never registered in Germany.  My grandmother was visiting her bridge-building husband working in Düsseldorf when her pregnancy transpired to be more advanced than thought! They left Düsseldorf four days later with the newborn to return to Budapest.

In ‘35 my father came to Uk as part of his European Grand Tour and your lady is likely to be slightly later than ‘35 as that year he was focusing on travelling, winning medals and exhibiting. He returned to Budapest at the end of the year, returning in ‘37 after he’d sorted out a “small marriage” difficulty (!) to wed my mother later that year.  The statue is probably from 1938 judging from her firm which is comparable to the Mary glasses made for Q Mary, and also the base which, by the way, would never have borne a label till much later - first he had tie-ons then sticky silver ones in ‘60’s+. He’s not known to have worked at all either in Germany or Austria (tho he did ski there) other than exhibiting for his numerous gold, silver et al medals and much more likely to be made in England.

I thought you might like the confirmation she’s definitely Komaromy’s work - I have similars and also photos from the time and absolutely definitely not from the Bimini workshop (there was never a Mr Bimini). Hopefully the book Angela and I are trying to do specifically on him will be produced soonish as a follow up to the London Lamp workers.

Hope this is of interest to and will help you find a fabulous appreciative home for a very beautiful piece.

Best wishes

Chris

Historical Relevance

Istvan Komáromy was born in Germany in 1910. He studied medical science in the late 1920's in Budapest, Hungary where he discovered he had a talent for glass blowing, making scientific glassware for fellow students and thereby creating additional income. This led to a fascination with glass and he began making artistic art deco-style glass items in his spare time. His professor at the time, sponsored Istvan on his first exhibition, launching his career as a young glass artist with exhibitions around Europe where he won a number of gold and silver medals. He moved to London in 1937 having married an Englishwoman and set up his own studios, producing work for the royal family and supplying the top London department stores.
