Technical Description
A fine 18th century Ale glass dating to c1740. It has an elongated round funnel bowl engraved with both floral and foliate wreaths, one containing the name P. TATE and the other a Violin, Cello or Double Base which has also been polished and engraved with four fine thin strings.
Musical instruments engraved on 18th century drinking glasses do exist (Harps can be found on Irish glasses) but they are extremely rare and it would be nice to think that the owner of the glass had an intimate association to the instrument...perhaps engraved as a presentation. Alternatively it could simply be a love token.
Either way, its a wonderful piece of personal history.
