Technical Description
A superb Jacobite Sympathy wine goblet dating to c1760. It has a large ogee bowl engraved with a beautiful carnation and two buds on one side of the bowl and the reverse with the profile portrait of a lady within an oval medallion suspended from leaf swags. Sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of two pairs of spiral threads outside a gauze. Conical oot with a snapped pontil.
The portrait could either be Louisa Maria Stuart from 1704, known to the Jacobites as Princess Royal, which hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. It shows her large red and white carnation above her right breast with further carnations in her hair.
Alternatively, the portrait could be Flora MacDonald, who sheltered Bonnie Prince Charlie by disguising him as her maidservant...or it could be the prince himself disguised as a lady and depicted with a large nose...
Either way, this is an exceptionally rare glass, the standard Rose and two buds being swapped for a carnation and two buds.
