Technical Description
A rare example of a Jacobite Acrostic engraved wine glass from c1750. It has a large pan top bowl above a multi spiral air twist stem with a central swelling knop. Conical foot with a snapped pontil.
The bowl has a continuous floral band of flowers featuring a Carnation, Honeysuckle, Rose, bud, and a Forget Me Not.
Remembering that it was the death penalty for being a Jacobite sympathiser, especially in the years after the battle of Culloden in 1745, the engravings were a risk, but also a way of secretly pledging yourself to the Jacobite cause...CHR Forget Me Not, relating to The Young Pretender, Charles.
