Technical Description
An engraved 18th-century facet cut wine glass. The ogee bowl is engraved "Success To The Noblemen And Gentlemen's Catch Club 1761". The stem is diamond facet cut and rests upon a conical foot with a rough pontil. The glass has a dark metal and is very well cut with excellent tooling and could well be as early as 1760, however, the engraving was probably done later to commemorate the opening of the club. A very unusual subject matter.
Historical Relevance
Hand-blown around the time the noblemen and gentlemen's catch club was founded in 1761, the club encouraged the performance of catches, cannons and glees. Three future kings were included in its membership.
