Contemporary Ceramic ‘Bog Creature’ Sculpture by Chiu-i Wu

Technical Description 

A contemporary ceramic creature sculpture, handmade and marked by the artist Chui-i Wu. This whimsical abstract animal is affectionately named the ‘bog creature’, a stoneware standing bowl of unique design. Built using the coil and pinch methods, gas fired and finished with a green oxide glaze that is particularly difficult to achieve. Intended as a bird bath, Chui-i’s Wu’s creatures are both functional and sculptural, being able to live both indoors or outdoors in the garden.

Comments

Chui-i Wu’s study of the arts developed at home as a young girl living in rural Taiwan, a time of nurturing filled with fond memories of playing among the rolling hills or drawing and painting “without thought”. Chui-i asserts that her work has “no deep meanings”, instead relying upon intuition to sense when what she is creating begins to “feel right”.

This struggle to elaborate on the artwork is refreshing and not-at-all lost on admirers. It is precisely this un-contrived inspiration that is so enjoyable, leaving a light and joyful impression. Now living among the rolling hills in England reminiscent of home, Chui-i exhibits both around the UK and Taiwan. Her light-hearted and flowing aesthetic exhibits a true recapturing of innocent, playful free-expression.
