Technical Description
An entirely unique contemporary ceramic sculpture handmade and signed by the artist Nicholas Marsh. This piece is a soda fired stoneware clay layered in tenmoku and shino glazes to create varied textures, vivid deposits and gold nuggets. The elliptical disc sculpture has been stacked and fired between large natural shells leaving behind calcium impressions. Securely rod-mounted atop a black granite plinth by the artist to be displayed indoors or outdoors in the garden.

A British-Canadian returning to his ancestral home, Nicholas found himself immersed in the small ex-mining village where his grandfather had once dug coal. Nicholas Marsh has taken his influence from working in a variety of countries adapting and creating for over 30 years before settling in rural England. This extensive experience has allowed him to create an aesthetic with depth and texture that feels authentic and grounded.
Nicholas has a deep appreciation of Neolithic history, geology and archaeological findings, all clearly present and inspirational in his works that are reminiscent of ancient unearthed relics. This has been emphasised by his particular method of stacking the kiln, each sculpture is carefully spaced, wedged and balanced using huge natural shells that leave residual impressions easily mistaken for a fossil.
