Technical Description
A fine antique Murano Decanter in green with silvered decoration depicting traditional Venetian scenes including The Lion of St Mark, along with six matching glasses.
The Lion of Saint Mark, representing Mark the Evangelist, is depicted as holding a Bible with the Latin words PAX TIBI (peace be with you), and surmounting a golden lion which is the symbol of the city of Venice and formerly of the Venetian Republic.
Historical Relevance
A fifteen-foot bronze statue of a lion stands on top of a column of Egyptian granite in St. Mark's Square Venice. It underwent a major restoration in the 1990's at which point it was concluded that its body was roughly 2,300 years old.
