Technical Description
An early 18th century baluster wine goblet. A pointed round funnel bowl with a solid base rests upon a large teared angular and basal knop. The piece is supported by a folded conical foot.
Either English or possibly Norwegian. One of a pair which we currently have.
This is very much an English form from the early 18th century. The glass is a nice grey colour and the metal is clear showing all the tooling that you would expect from drinking glasses of this ear. However under UV light the glass is green and alongside the weight, it would suggest soda glass.
To my knowledge, this form was never made on the continent at that time and the form was not copied on the continent at a later time. There is a possibility that the glass is Norwegian and research is on going. Most likely, it’s a rare English Baluster in Soda.
There is a school of thought that says that all English balusters from this era were lead glass and that soda examples…must have been made elsewhere. However, it would make sense to us that there was a transition period in the late 17th and early 18th century (perhaps 10 years or more) where some were made in lead and others in soda and that as lead became more popular, soda glasses were phased out.
We have shown the pair of baluster goblets (this glass is the one on the left), alongside another smaller baluster wine glass from the same period...a classic English form, in the same metal and then another rare baluster form, a drop knop, in the same metal again…all soda and all from the early 18th century.
