Technical Description
A rare example of a Jacobite Acrotic engraved wine glass from c1750. It has a round funnel bowl above a plain stem and conical foot.
The bowl has a continuous floral band of flowers featuring a Carnation, Honeysuckle, Rose and two buds, and a Forget Me Not.
Remembering that it was the death penalty for being a Jacobite sympathiser, especially in the years after the battle of Culloden in 1745, the engravings were a risk, but also a way of secretly pledging yourself to the Jacobite cause...CHR Forget Me Not, relating to The Young Pretender, Charles.
Historical Relevance
Made shortly after the battle of Culloden, the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745.
