Technical Description
A pair of mid Victorian slice cut Coaching glasses.
Coaching glasses first appeared in the late 18th century and were used at staging inns along the major couch routes. With short turnaround times, it became increasingly difficult for the passengers to take advantage of the drinks and food on offer by the innkeepers. Thus, coaching glasses were carried on a tray to the travellers, brim down, and then filled and handed to those wishing refreshment. The ‘heel’ of the glass fits perfectly in the hand and there was no need for a foot.
