Ale Glass
The invention of the ale glass originates in 18th century England, forever forging a class of their own. From tall stemmed glasses elaborately decorated with hops and barley to beautifully sculpted dwarf ales and rustic flutes.
Development of the ale glass cannot be detached from the drink itself. The brewing of beers can be traced back as far as the Sumerian civilisation with the discovery of cuneiform recipe tablets and fragments of pottery laced with residue. 'Ale' historically refers to an alcoholic beverage brewed without hops. A botanical herb mixture was previously added to achieve the bittering and preservation of this brew.
Weak ale was consumed like water and used as a source of nutrition without the intoxicating effects. Gentleman's clubs and taverns reserved the stronger concoctions while it was not uncommon for children to drink the weaker brews.
